TOLEDO, Ohio — A violent incident unfolded Saturday evening at a popular community gathering, leaving 12 individuals wounded by gunfire and prompting an urgent law enforcement response.
The shooting occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m. in the vicinity of the Old West End Festival. Toledo Police initially received a call regarding a single person shot, but responders quickly discovered multiple victims at the scene. Authorities confirmed two of those injured are in critical condition, and they are investigating whether additional victims may have departed the area without seeking immediate medical attention.
Investigators stated they are pursuing at least two suspects, believed to have been exchanging gunfire. The victims, whose average age falls in the early 20s, were among several hundred people attending the festive outdoor event. Witnesses recounted that live music was underway when gunshots rang out, causing attendees to immediately seek cover. One individual reported observing a firearm thrown to the ground fewer than 50 feet from their location.
Law enforcement is appealing to the public for assistance, specifically requesting that festival-goers examine any mobile phone recordings they may have taken to identify potential evidence. While it has not been determined if the suspects are minors, Toledo Police emphasized they are expanding outreach initiatives targeting youth to deter further violence during the summer months.
A Deputy Police Chief addressed concerns about perceptions of violence among young people, stating that such acts are not exciting and that this incident serves as a sobering illustration of the real-world consequences of gun-related behavior.
Municipal officials expressed regret that the celebration was disrupted, affirming that the violence does not align with the character or values of the Toledo community. They stressed that this type of conduct will not be tolerated and that residents will act swiftly to address it.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine commented on the situation, voicing deep concern and emphasizing that summer festivals ought to be secure environments where families can gather without apprehension. He expressed confidence that investigators would successfully identify and apprehend those responsible.
The search for the suspects remains ongoing, and police continue to encourage anyone with relevant information to contact authorities.
