U.S. Conducts Self-Defense Strikes on Southern Iran Amid Nuclear Negotiations

U.S. forces conducted self-defense strikes in southern Iran today, targeting missile launch sites and Iranian vessels attempting to emplace mines, according to Capt. Tim Hawkins, spokesperson for U.S. Central Command.

“U.S. forces conducted self-defense strikes in southern Iran today to protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces,” Hawkins stated. “Targets included missile launch sites and Iranian boats attempting to emplace mines. U.S. Central Command continues to defend our forces while using restraint during the ongoing ceasefire.”

The military action comes amid fluctuating diplomatic signals regarding negotiations between the United States and Iran. Over the weekend, administration officials indicated that a peace agreement appeared imminent, though President Donald Trump later stated on Truth Social that there was “no rush” to finalize a deal.

A central point of contention remains the disposition of Iran’s enriched uranium and nuclear capabilities. In a recent post, President Trump outlined that enriched uranium and nuclear materials “will either be immediately turned over to the United States to be brought home and destroyed or preferably in conjunction and coordination with the Islamic Republic of Iran, destroyed in place or at another acceptable location with the Atomic Energy Commission or its equivalent being witness to this event.”

The strikes occurred on Memorial Day as diplomatic efforts continued. While negotiations had appeared to be progressing positively over the weekend, the latest military action underscores the volatile nature of the situation in the region.

U.S. Central Command emphasized its commitment to protecting American personnel while exercising restraint in alignment with the ongoing ceasefire framework. Officials continue to monitor developments closely as regional tensions remain elevated.
