Voters in Kentucky’s 4th congressional district head to the polls on Tuesday to decide the fate of incumbent Republican Rep. Thomas Massie, who faces a well-funded challenge from Trump-backed candidate Ed Gallrein in what has become the most expensive congressional primary in history.
President Trump has made removing Massie a top priority, according to Axios reporter Alex Isenstadt. Trump’s political operation has spent millions of dollars on the race, began organizing against Massie last year, and has run advertisements targeting the incumbent. Sources close to the White House describe the effort as a major focus for the administration.
Massie has drawn Trump’s ire for defying the president on key issues, including voting against the “big beautiful bill” and pressing for the release of the Epstein files. He was one of the few House Republicans to endorse Ron DeSantis during the 2024 presidential campaign and has not been a consistent Trump ally. Trump has publicly criticized Massie as a “third rate congressman,” “weak pathetic RINO,” “complete loser,” “lightweight,” and “sick wacko.”
Ed Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL and fifth-generation farmer, is described as 100% behind Trump. Isenstadt reported that the Trump team and White House actively recruited Gallrein as a candidate with a strong background and biography specifically to challenge Massie, with Trump himself involved in the process.
Massie, known for his libertarian-leaning views, has survived previous primary challenges in a district that has historically supported such candidates. Kentucky voters have backed figures like Sen. Rand Paul, a Massie ally. The 4th district gave strong support to Trump in the 2024 election, raising questions about whether voters will tolerate Massie’s consistent opposition to the president.
Recent Trump-backed primary successes include victories against Sen. Bill Cassidy and Indiana state legislators who opposed his redistricting efforts. A loss for Massie would send a strong signal to other Republicans to align closely with Trump, reinforcing that it remains his party despite criticisms on issues such as the war in Iran.
Endorsements highlight the divide: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is supporting Gallrein, while Rep. Lauren Boebert, a close friend of Massie, and Sen. Rand Paul are backing the incumbent.
Should Massie prevail, it would represent a notable setback for Trump given the resources and emphasis placed on the race. Democrats would likely highlight it as evidence that Trump’s grip on the Republican Party is not absolute. Conversely, a Massie defeat could embolden further primary challenges, potentially targeting critics like Boebert or Rand Paul in future cycles such as 2028, once filing deadlines allow.
Other races on Tuesday’s ballot in Kentucky include a competitive governor’s contest and a Senate primary where Trump has endorsed Andy Bar. However, the Massie-Gallrein matchup is expected to dominate headlines.
